Springtime is almost here and lots of people are taking stock of their to-do lists. But before you start your spring cleaning or yard work, there’s one important thing you need to do: practice fire safety. Lancaster County Fire Rescue needs you to know that smoke detectors save lives – but only if they work. Our fire departments want you to know why it’s so important for you to check your smoke detectors this time of year.
Inspection is key
Inspecting all of your household alarms is the only way to make sure they’ll work properly in an emergency. Test each smoke detector (as well as carbon monoxide detectors) in every room. If one doesn’t work, try replacing the batteries. Don’t have batteries on hand? Make a point to go to the store and take care of it right then. You never know when a fire could break out in your home so you need to be prepared. If batteries don’t do the trick, buy and install a new smoke alarm.
Replace outdated devices
Did you know that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have expiration dates? Look for this information when you’re replacing the batteries or testing the device.
Create a springtime fire escape plan
Checking, maintaining, or replacing your smoke is one important way to practice fire safety at your home this spring, but it’s not the only thing you should focus on. You should also practice your fire escape plan. Take time to meet with your family to review and revise your emergency escape plan for fires. Don’t have a fire escape plan? Walk around your home and create multiple routes for each person to get out in case the unthinkable happens.
