While many fire safety hazards around the home are obvious, such as candles and heaters, it’s easy to forget that other things in your home can also be a risk. This includes appliances such as washers and dryers. Here at Lancaster County Fire Rescue in Lancaster, SC, we make it our mission to offer fire protection and advice to area residents. Here are several washer and dryer fire safety facts:

  1. Clean your washer and dryer – It may surprise you to learn that the leading cause of washer and dryer fires stems from a lack of proper cleaning. From time to time, clean both the inside and outside of your washer and dryer. Make note of anything that looks odd or out of place and call for repairs.
  2. Dispose of dryer lint – Always check your dryer’s lint trap before you start up the machine. Lint can easily catch fire. After you remove lint from the lint trap, throw it away and keep it away from any source of flame or heat.
  3. Don’t overload your machines – It’s never a good idea to push your washer or dryer to its limits. Don’t overfill them since an overworked appliance can be a potential fire hazard.
  4. Don’t block the air exhaust vent pipe – Never place any objects over your air exhaust vent pipe. This can block in dirt and other debris that can cause your washer to strain itself.
  5. Leave the vent flap open – Like with the air exhaust vent pipe, make sure that you leave your dryer’s vent flap open, so air can exit the machine and your home. A clogged or blocked vent can be damaging to the dryer and can cause a fire.
